Guest post by Brad Scott. Behind the Pacific Earthquakes 2021.

On Friday 5th March 2021 an unprecedented series of Earthquakes were generated on the Hikurangi Subduction Zone, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Shaking was felt throughout New Zealand from the first quake off East Cape in the early hours of the morning. At approximately 9am a larger quake took place near the Kermadec Islands, causing resulting in evacuation orders for coastal areas of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Mobile phone tsunami evacuation order for
coastal residents of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, including the
two largest towns of Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki. A large seismic
event near the Kermadec Islands had the potential to
generate a tsunami similar to that seen in Japan in 20ll.
Fortunately this did not come to pass and there were no reports of
property damage or injuries.
